The Best Large Air Conditioners in NZ To Cool Your Entire House Effortlessly

Having to spend most of my young life without air conditioners has taught me of the importance of them. My first investment was in a dinky window unit that was my first lesson into the foray. Thankfully, I wouldn’t have to wait too long before I educated myself on the finer points of this subject.

Air conditioners are a first-world gem that has been a game-changer for me. As a big person, I like to have a cooler space.  It’s a comfort that I love to share with others as I invite them over. So you can share in that experience, here is our list of considerations for the best large air conditioner in NZ.

The Top Five Air Conditioners in NZ For You

Below are our five considerations for our favourite large air conditioners.

  • Daikin FTXZ50NV1B
  • Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bronte / SRK63ZRA-W
  • Hitachi RAS-S50YHA
  • Panasonic CS/CU-Z60VKR

These are all considered heat pumps based on their purest definition. It means that all of those on this list also functions as a heater.  We will be primarily focusing on the cooling effectiveness. We will also be reviewing based on other ease-of-use features. Energy-efficiency will also count for high marks.

Daikin FTXZ50NV1B

Daikin FTXZ50NV1B
  • Power Cool (kW) 1.18 Heat (kW) 1.37
  • Weight Indoor (kg) 15 Outdoor (kg) 50
  • Power Supply 1 phase 220-240 50 Hz
  • Dimension Indoor (mm) 295 x 798 x 372 Outdoor (mm) 300 693 x 795 x 300

The first item we have on this list is a slightly better heater than it is an air conditioner. It isn’t a bad thing, as it bodes well considering that this is an incredibly useful unit. It’s also an incredibly quiet unit when installed indoors, not as much outdoors.

The energy efficiency means it will cost somewhere around $540 per year. It is better than most, but about average for those on this list. The Daikin FTXZ50NV1B also don’t have a suggested retail price, but they are known for trustworthy customer service.

This air conditioner has five fan speeds and a 24-hour timer that will allow you greater control. It is a high-wall unit, same as all of these. We will be getting into that later in this article.

An additional timer up to seven days can is a purchasable extra. You can also purchase WiFi as an extra feature if you would like. Overall, it is a powerful and versatile unit that can is customizable as you want it.

Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC

Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC
  • Power 240 V
  • Cooling Capacity (Watts) 5,000 , Heating Capacity (Watts) 6,000
  • Weight – Inside Unit (kg) 12.5  , Weight – Outside Unit (kg) 42
  • Dimension Inside Unit 280 x 980 x 240 mm , Outside Unit 716 x 820 x 315 mm

The Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC is known to be a beast indoors. It may be a bit noisier on the inside, but it is just as an active cooling and heating as the Daikin model we just reviewed. An excellent option for the best heat pump in NZ.

It has one less fan speed, which is not much of a loss. Instead of it being optional, the WiFi and the seven-day timer are both included. As a result, you may feel like there is a large number of needless features. But this makes the base unit incredibly powerful.

On energy efficiency, it has five stars for heating and four stars for cooling. It makes it slightly more effective than the Daikin at just under $500. That makes this the most cost-effective option on this list when we focus upon the yearly cost of running it.

The outdoor noise is the more significant issue here, as it is a bit too loud for my tastes there. As an indoor unit, it easily stands toe-to-toe with anything here.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bronte / SRK63ZRA-W

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bronte / SRK63ZRA-W
  • Cooling Power 6.3 kW , Heating Power 7.1 kW
  • Indoor Weight 15.5 kg , Outdoor Weight 45 kg

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bronte is a bit of a mouthful to say all at once. Still, it is a good representation of one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Wherever Mitsubishi goes, they appear to excel. They have been on our list a few times, and this is their entry for the best air conditioner.

Its cooling power is on par when compared to any unit on this list. But when we bring out its heating power, the Mitsubishi shines as a unit that performs excellently at low-temperature settings. While this is secondary on our search for the best air conditioner, it is worth mentioning.

Unusually enough, this unit is a bit noisier inside. It doesn’t appear to have any problems with cooling a larger space. On the convenience side, it also comes built-in with a 24-hour timer, a seven-day timer, and optional WiFi features.

It is weakest when it comes to energy efficiency, as it costs around $625 per year. It has four stars on heating and three stars on cooling. Regardless of this slight downturn, it is a fantastic heat pump.

Hitachi is another one on this list that is a capable heat pump at lower temperatures. It is also kind of around the middle when it comes to energy-efficient models. It costs $545 per year to run with a four-star heating and cooling rating.

Being another recognizable brand in the technology sector, Hitachi has some high ratings. Features like a seven-day timer, a 24-hour timer, and optional WiFi are available. Of course, remote control is included with any of these listed if you do not like WiFi.

On the cooling efficiency front, it has one of the highest levels listed. It is a better cooler than it is a heater, which bodes well on this list. For those looking for a cooler, this is a great choice.

Among those we reviewed, it is the noisiest outdoor unit. As long as you are willing to get over this, it is an excellent option as one of the best air conditioners NZ has available.

  • Cooling Capacity (kW 6.00 , Heating Capacity (kW) 7.20
  • Weight Indoor 13 kg , Outdoor 50 kg

As another recognizable brand that is a king of technology, Panasonic is among fellow champions on this list. Each of these air conditioners is incredibly close to each other in several aspects. If you haven’t guessed by now, it is going to be challenging to pick a winner.

As expected, it has many of the same features you would expect. Just be aware you will have to pay extra for the seven-day timer and the WiFi, which allows you to invest your money where you want to.

Its running costs leave a bit to be desired, as it nears $700 over the entire year.  It has stars of 3.5 on heating and three on cooling, which means that it is still at or above average.

Regardless, it still outperforms many heaters and coolers of the same power level. As a high wall heat pump, it manages to heat or cool any location with relatively limited noise.

Features of The Best Large Air Conditioners

Now that we have our list, it is time to dig into the features. Everything we have discussed either has the option, or the inclusion, of these features listed below.

Energy Efficiency

New Zealand has founded the Energy Efficient Conservation Authority (EECA) that has a strategic focus on reducing the energy usage of each business and home in NZ. As a result of the efforts of the government, each appliance comes with an energy star rating to tell us which is best for energy savings.

Below is our list of the most energy-efficient heaters and coolers in NZ. We will be including both sides because each of these heat pumps act as large air conditioners and heaters.

  • Daikin FTXZ50NV1B: 4.5 heating stars and 3.5 cooling stars
  • Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC: 5 and 4
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bronte / SRK63ZRA-W: 4 and 3
  • Hitachi RAS-S50YHA: 4 and 4
  • Panasonic CS/CU-Z60VKR: 3.5 and 3

The Fujitsu provides us with the highest overall rating but ties with the Hitachi model in cooling rating. What you buy will depend on your tolerance for energy-efficiency.

Cooling and Heating

These days, it is impossible to find a large air conditioner, which runs above 6 kW, without a heater. It is relatively inefficient to not have the two in one considering the power of modern technology. As a result, all of the models on this list will double as a heater and a cooler.

All of the models on this list have WiFi as an optional feature. It is for those who are willing to download an application on their phone or tablet.

It provides you with a new place to access your controls. If you think it is getting too hot in your room, you can increase the cooling power without getting up from your reading chair. It is one of the joys of living in the 21st century.

Noise Levels

Again, these will be in two different categories. Outdoors and indoors. The closer we reach to 70 dBA, the volume of an office, the harder it will be to hear from you.

  • Daikin FTXZ50NV1B: 24 dBA inside and 50 dBA
  • Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC: 29 and 61
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bronte / SRK63ZRA-W: 28 and 45
  • Hitachi RAS-S50YHA:28 and 53
  • Panasonic CS/CU-Z60VKR: 32 and 48

Dehumidifying Features

When cooling the air, it will naturally remove moisture from the air. Scientifically speaking, cold air does not hold much water. Hot air has a higher chance of maintaining humidity. In a sense, each of these models has dehumidifying features, much like any other active cooler.

When considering the most effective air conditioner, our vote goes to the Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC. The reason is this: while this is not the most effective overall heat pump, our focus is to find the most effective air conditioner. The Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC is easily the most effective cooler on this list.

If you are seeking the most effective overall feature, you should pick the Mitsubishi. It is a less effective cooler than the Fujitsu model, which makes it a solid runner up on other fronts. If you have a different opinion, any of the air conditioners on this list will help you. Fur us, the best air conditioner in NZ is the Fujitsu ASTG18KMTC.
